Unstoppable

I watched the movie “ Unstoppable “ a few days ago. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a movie based on a true story where a runaway train nearly caused havoc to a community. Firstly, the train was travelling at a high speed and unmanned. It went out of control. Secondly, it was carrying some toxic chemicals in its carriages and if they exploded, the consequence would have been fatal. Finally, it nearly crashed into a small town. If it had done so, many people would perish because of the impact and the spill of the chemicals.

I thought about the church…..is it (i) unstoppable (ii) explosive (iii) impactful? I read a book that drove the point home-many of our churches are just on the maintenance mode and we are happy if 1 or 2 new ones are added in the course of the year. Usually these are Christians from other churches. However, the NT church multiplied the number of its members daily. It was unstoppable. I liken this to a virus, epidemic or disease. If the disease is not contained, it becomes unstoppable like the runaway train. The church should be like a virus/disease….it should spread like an uncontrollable virus. The church should raise its people to reach/touch every strata of the community at a high and uncontrollable speed.

Throughout recent history, the church has not been impactful. We are only good at organizing activities to keep the members busy within the walls of the church. Even where large congregations exist, these have not made a mark on the community or nation. In the NT, we see communities affected by the presence of Christians in their midst. The sick ones were healed, blind eyes opened, the lame walked….demons were cast out. The NT ministries were explosive. The people could not deny the presence and power of the Holy Spirit working with the disciples. We need this unstoppable, impactful and explosive phenomena in our churches again. Come Holy Spirit and ignite a runaway church!!
